About the Maine Windjammer Association

Our Mission

The Maine Windjammer Association (MWA) is dedicated to preserving and promoting authentic, wind-powered sailing adventures that honor traditional seamanship, offer warm and genuine hospitality, and give guests the opportunity to sustainably explore the hidden harbors and island landscapes that make Midcoast Maine unique. MWA members are committed to providing a guest experience aligned with these values and honoring the legacy of windjamming, while maintaining their vessels and crew to the highest safety and quality standards.

About us

The Maine Windjammer Association is made up of independent owner-operators of traditionally-rigged sailing vessels, all homeported in Midcoast Maine. Each vessel is led by an owner-operator who is personally involved in daily operations — often serving as captain and host. These are not corporate cruise ships, but small businesses run by people who live and work on the coast and welcome guests aboard with pride and personal care.

Association members share a commitment to authenticity, cooperation, and high standards. While each windjammer has its own character, members work together to promote and protect Maine’s windjamming industry through collaborative marketing, shared best practices, and advocacy — ensuring this distinctive maritime tradition continues for generations.

All Maine Windjammer Association vessels meet U.S. Coast Guard regulations and are inspected annually.

Jim Dugan This fall the Maine Windjammer Association (MWA) was awarded the prestigious William Avery Baker Award from Mystic Seaport Museum, an honor that shines a spotlight on the enduring legacy of these historic schooners and the people who keep them sailing.
