Dining on board

Windjammers are a movable feast with on-deck dining and fabulous, fresh food. Each Maine Windjammer has a professional cook and galley crew who craft three homemade meals a day (plus hors d’oeuvres and desserts galore!).

Your day begins with a satisfying breakfast that might include: freshly baked muffins, farm-fresh eggs, pancakes or French toast, fruit, and granola. Early risers can enjoy freshly brewed coffee, tea and pastries served before breakfast as the morning sun rises over Penobscot Bay.

Lunch might include savory soups or chowders, homemade bread or sandwiches, and a variety of salads. In the late afternoon, hors d’oeuvres appear on deck, inviting conversation as the sails come down and the anchor is set for the evening.

“A lovely surprise was the amazing food…fresh, tasty, and plentiful. You won’t go away hungry.” Judy M, Google review

Dinner is a relaxed, communal affair. Menu items might be fresh fish, a hearty roast or homemade pasta, seasonal vegetables, creative side dishes, and a homemade dessert. Meals are served family-style, with guests gathered around the table or lingering on deck as the light fades. Evenings on board are often accompanied by music, conversation, and stories, and followed by the dazzling stars in Maine’s dark skies.

Dining aboard a Maine Windjammer is more than simply eating well — it becomes part of the natural rhythm of the voyage. Good food and good company sit at the center of every trip.

The Maine Lobster Bake

No Maine Windjammer experience would be complete without a traditional lobster bake. On most multi-night cruises, guests go ashore to a secluded island for an authentic Downeast feast.

The lobsters, often caught just a day or two earlier, are steamed alongside traditional fixings like corn on the cob, potatoes, onions, and sometimes mussels, all prepared over an open fire or large seaside cooker. The setting is simple and unforgettable: salt air, spruce trees overhead, the schooner riding quietly at anchor offshore.

Take a windjammer cruise and the toughest decision you might have to make is how many lobsters to eat at the beach side lobster bake.
